The best way to deal with defensive Dragon at Town Hall 8

Nowadays, with the emergence of Poison Spell, we rarely can see tier 1 and tier 2 troops in the enemy Clan Castles. People start using Dragons, Balloons, Lava Hound,… as the defensive troops for all Town Hall levels.

One of the most popular Clan Castle troop combinations we usually have to encounter at Town Hall 8 is Dragon + Balloon. If you use Dragons, truly you don’t need to care about them. But what about other stategies? If you want to go with either Golems or Hog Riders based attacks, don’t ignore those annoying troops.

What is the best killsquad to deal with defensive Dragon?

I am not saying this is the best one, but I’ve found that It’s extremely easy to do and really effective. I mentioned this combo couples of times before on cocland but I still want to create an individual page for it!

We are going to use our Clan Castles to deal with that Dragon by using this combo:

2xwitch + Barbarian

Because the Witch maximum level is just 2, If your Clan level is either 5 or above, you can easily require 2 maxed Witches from your Clan mates. Otherwise, level 1 Witches are still okay. Obviously 2 Witches and 1 Barbarian are not enough to kill Dragon + Balloon, we will need to bring 3-4 more Barbarian and 2-3 Wizards.

Totally, our Killsquad will be like this:

2xwitch + 5xBarbarian  + 3xwizard

You shouldn’t use this killsquad when:

  • You have neither Golems or Hog Riders in your army.
  • You are going to attack with Dragons.

This killsquad is extremely easy to use:

  1. Lure the Clan troops out. If you don’t have enough space to do that, send 1 Hog/Balloon into the enemy base.
  2. Drop 1 Archer/Barbarian for luring them to the corner where you I decide to start attacking. Don’t lure the enemy troops to the side you don’t want to start the raid or it will be a huge waste of troops.
  3. Once the Dragon starts attacking your Barbarian, quickly deploy 2-3 more Barbarian nearby and place your Clan Castle. The Dragon will be locked on your Barbarians and summoned Skeletons, that’s the best time to place your Wizards around the Dragon and make sure that they will not be hit by the defenses.

  4. Drop the Poison Spell poison spell on the enemy Dragon.
  5. The Dragon will be taken down after a few seconds.

  • Lure the enemy Clan troops to the side where you start attacking.
  • A few seconds before the Dragon get removed, quickly deploy your Golems for taking damage and protecting your Witches/Wizards.
  • If you are going to attack with just Hog Riders, quickly send them before the enemy defenses start hitting your Witches/Wizards. After the enemy defenses get ravaged, your Witches/Wizards can clean up the base with ease.
  • Don’t forget to use the Poison Spell.

There is another way to deal with Dragon without using Witches is continuously sending Barbarians before the Dragon’s face and drop your Wizards right after it as I mentioned in the GoVaLo guide. You can do this If you want to save more spaces for other troops or you don’t have Witch.

What do you think about this tip? Do you have any better one? Let’s discuss about this!

  1. Excellent post,,, I seen this in the video from your ultimate hogs post,,, pretty cool seeing that drag lock onto those skeletons, I am definitely going to test this one out,, Ever since poison, drags in cc are common place,,, I’ve been dealing with them by poison and another drag which doesn’t really help much after cc drag taking out,,, but with this using witch,,, she can help the total raid and it leaves more room for other troops,, I like it,,, thanks guys another good one.

    Cheers ?

  2. Personally I think using the CC witches as a distraction is a waste (obv its not if you are lucky and the witches don’t get toasted!) I have been using the Barbs and wizz method since the poison update and find it very effective. Then that leaves my cc to have better troops in to compliment my attack. – Android

    • The posion spell is quite effective against high hp troops because of the update. Not so much against skellies. Im a th 9, when im against a drag, I lure it out to the corner then drop a giant then 4 wiz then the cc troops should be gone, I’ve never tried the strategy above but it looks really effective.

        • I’ve found that if I drop a giant the drag follows it in toward base away from killing troops,,, the ai is still very annoying when troops attack structures instead of cc troops,,, even though recent updates were supposed to negate this… but I agree poison on drags seems pretty futile,, the biggest advantage to putting drags in cc is eating up time to kill them,,, 3 mins goes quick during a war attack, nothing worse than getting the 2 star with troops still attacking,,, but I digress lol

          Cheers ?

          • The poison spell will really slow down the dragon’s moving speed, AND his attack speed, and will eat away at his health.. I’ve taken down a level 3 dragon with a level 1 poison spell, 4 level 4 wizards and 5 level 5 archers.. So I suggest you give it a try ^_^

          • I’ve tried it and still use poison on every war attack regardless of what troops come out,,, and yes you have a valid point poison slows him down.

          • Still with 4 wizz and 5 archers well placed you don’t need a poison spell!! It just takes 1 extra second to kill the dragon. I always kill the dragon with 2 barbs and 5/6 wizz. This way you can use an earthquake spell instead. A lot of people underestimate the power of an earthquake, even at lvl 1. 13% damage on 4/5 buildings in the core or double damage to the walls, really speeds up your attack.

Like mentioned above, the poison spell also requires precious time. I have seen so many attacks at 90%-99%. My advice: don’t use the poison!

    • I think the point is to time the barbs in front of the witches so drag doesn’t target her between her skeletons being summoned,,, I haven’t really used it but I can see that that is the part of this strategy that’ll take a bit of time to get down…

      Cheers ?

      • Once lured, the dragon will go after any troop which is placed on the battle field, and so, it would make sense to use archers as they can shoot upwards, and while the dragon starts breathing fire on them, the witches and wizards can be deployed.. And besides, the barbarians would just run towards the nearest building they can find, whereas the archers would stand where you want them to, keeping the dragon away from the defenses of the base. But hey, it’s just an idea.

        • Not true. the dragon will target the barbarian first. Example, you can drop 1 barb, drop 6-7 archers around the dragon and after the dragon kills the barb, drop another right away. The dragon will continue to target the barbarian before the archers. You can continue this until the archers take out the dragon.
